In 1964, pacifist Jawaharlal Nehru (1889–1964), the first prime minister of independent India, was dressed in his traditional coat in Vogue magazine. Vogue was an important fashion influence, and the Nehru jacket, named after Prime Minister Nehru, began to gain popularity.
